Founding and Development
The entry of the SPIEGEL Group into the television market began in 1988. SPIEGEL TV GmbH was founded in 1990 and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SPIEGEL-Verlag, publisher of the well-known German print magazine "DER SPIEGEL". Through its cooperation with the Development Company for Television Programs (dctp) the publishing house was able to secure fixed time slots on various German private TV stations.
Today six SPIEGEL TV formats are broadcast on channels like RTL, Sat.1 and VOX, and an own Pay-TV channel is being operated since 2005, SPIEGEL TV Digital. The 240 staff members of SPIEGEL TV supply over 1200 minutes of broadcast per week. In addition, SPIEGEL TV also produces formats for the public broadcasters ARD and ZDF.
SPIEGEL TV is an award-winning producer of factual programming with a strong focus on history, science, social issues, travel, lifestyle and current affairs.
Since the founding of a separate ‘History’ department SPIEGEL TV has devoted itself exclusively to contemporary history. Documentaries created by this department acclaim regularly the audiences and critics - some of them produced in cooperation with broadcasters like BBC, WGBH, ARD, ZDF are shown world-wide at festivals, cinemas and on television.
SPIEGEL TV distribution is one of the leading television distributors in terms of docs and factual programming. Providing a large range of high quality documentaries the sales team successfully services the key networks, broadcasters and media companies around the world.
Its catalogue covers different genres of documentaries: history, science, social issues, travel, lifestyle and current affairs. Each film is specially selected and re-edited for the requirements of the international TV market.
High budget productions in cooperation with global players like BBC, Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, History, ZDF, ARTE, La7 and many others established the company as one of the foremost producers of blue chip documentaries.
Besides coproduction there is a great focus on the DVD market as well as new media.
